Cape Town's top 5 Surfing Spots PDF Print E-mail

Around the Cape Peninsula one will find over 50 surfing spots within an hours drive. The largest concentration of spots lies on the Atlantic side, which is the West side of the Peninsula. Of the 5 spots we recommend, 3 are for beginners and 2 for the more advanced surfer.

1. Big Bay, North of the City

The prevailing wind of Cape Town, the South Easter, ensures a continual supply of waves of various sizes. This beach is also very popular with sail boarders. When you’re tired of surfing, just admire one of the most stunning views in the world, the majestic Table Mountain across the bay.

2. Muizenberg on the False Bay Coast

Even with a South Easter blowing into your face, chances are you can catch a small ride. Because the water is not that deep, waves will form quite far from the shoreline, which can give you any number of long rides. Muizenberg is more popular during the winter months when the off shore North Wester blows.

3. Long Beach, Kommetjie

With the off shore breeze, makes Long Beach ideal for surfers, especially the beginners. The local population enjoys the long stretch of pristine white sand, whether to just sit and stare, or take long walks. Long beach enjoys the most beautiful views, Noordhoek mountains, the back end of Table Mountain and the Sentinal mountain at distant Hout Bay, all this across the dark blue sea that borders near by Noordhoek beach.

4. Llandudno

Traveling from the city along the Atlantic Ocean side, once past Camps Bay, follow the steep road down to Llandudno beach. This is a very up market village with palatial homes dotted against the mountainside. The surfing here is recommended for the more advanced surfer. The sandy beach is flanked on either sides with huge boulders and the shifting sand banks can vary the waves and can deliver some awesome barrels.

5. Outer Kom

The village of Kommetjie (small basin) lies on the Atlantic side, further down south in the Peninsula. Definitely for the more advanced surfer, as there is no sandy beach and you have to negotiate the rocks going out and coming in. Real adrenaline stuff here!
