Welcome to the Karoo Gariep conservancy, home to the Karoo Hippo. On this 12000 ha block of karoo land, you will find two four star guesthouses situated in the district of Hanover, in the Northern Cape Province nl New Holme Karoo guest farm, home of the Karoo Hippo Project under the management of owners, PC & Marisa Ferreira.

Mieliefontein Karoo guest farm under the management of owners, Ian & Elma Ferreira. At Mieliefontein you will also find the Karoo Gariep abattoir which Ian Ferreira build in 1992. Guests at Wolmade self-catering lodge have access to all the activities on the conservancy, also managed by Elma Ferreira.

These farms are working farms where wool, ostrich, karoo lamb, venison and beef are produced. We offer some activities to our guests such as horse riding, donkycard rides, filching, birding, safaris and fly-ins.

Mieliefontein Karoo Guest Farm

This vast 12 000-hectare Karoo farm is halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town in the Hanover district. Here sheep and cattle are raised and guests may tour the farm.

Built in 1964 by owners Ian and Elma Ferreira, the farm house is set in parklike gardens and is decorated with a mix of antique pieces and cottage furniture. Spacious bedrooms are en suite, and one has a private bathroom, with a separate self-contained cottage for families.

Delicious meals, freshly prepared with farm produce. Walks, horse riding, birding and hippo drive. No credit cards.

Wolmade Self Catering Lodge

Wolmade is ideal for bigger groups and families who want to have a karoo experience and still be on there own.

The house has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped and linen and towels are provided.

Guests at Wolmade have access to all the activities on the conservancy. By arrangement guests can be catered for at Mieliefontein.

Karoo Hippo Project

250 years ago the last hippo hunt in the karoo was recorded. With his information in his hands a dream was born within P.C. Ferreira .Bring them back to the conservancy.
It was early morning 13 December 2006 when three hippos was off loded in a hippo pool on the farm New Holme in the Hanover area in the karoo.

There is a deck being build at the pool were sundowners is served to the guests or the public who like to see this big secretive karoo animals and join in the joy of this success story.
