In 1685 the newly appointed Governer-General to the Cape of Good Hope, Simon van der Stel, chose 891 morgen situated in a natural garden behind Table Mountain, behind him the hillocks of Constantiaberg, in front an endless view to Paarl and Stellenbosch, and to the right, the beautiful False Bay unfolding further and further into the horizon. He called the farm Constantia and planted vines, and the rest is history … Mother nature smiled when she prepared the Constantia Valley for the winemaker. The influence of the sun, wind, oceans and fertile soil, now one of the finest wine producing regions in the world. Today the South African wine routes spread far inland, producing world class winning wines, enjoyed in the best restaurants, and of course at home a well. This is rather a special achievement, considering the varying climates from the coast to the drier inland Karoo regions. Want to know and visit all the Wine Routes in South Africa?
